Alum Cave at Sunrise From a Gatlinburg Lobby

The Alum Cave trailhead is twenty-two minutes from our parking lot. If you leave at 6, you're at the bluffs before the sun clears the ridge. Here is how to set up a May sunrise hike.

Why this is a May trail, specifically

Alum Cave Bluffs trail is a 4.4-mile round-trip with a steady climb of about 1,125 feet from the trailhead to the bluffs. In July the lot is full by 8. In late October the leaf-peepers add another hour to the drive. May is the window where the trees are leafed-out but the heat hasn't set in, and the trailhead still has open parking at 6 a.m. on weekdays.

From the Days Inn parking lot to the Alum Cave trailhead is twenty-two minutes if you drive the speed limit on US-441 South. If you leave the room at 5:45, you are on the trail by 6:15 and at the bluffs by 8.

The honest gradient picture

This is not a flat walk. The first 1.4 miles are gentle, including the Arch Rock section where the trail passes under a natural stone arch. After Arch Rock the grade picks up. The last half-mile to the bluffs is where the lungs get the workout. Hikers who turn around at Arch Rock still leave feeling like they did the trail justice — it is a real destination on its own.

The trail is rocky enough that real shoes matter. Hiking boots are overkill, but flip-flops will end the morning early.

Sunrise specifics for mid-May

Mid-May sunrise in Gatlinburg is around 6:25. The bluffs face roughly southwest, so you do not see the actual sunrise from them — what you see is the light hitting the opposite ridge first and then walking down toward you. It is a slower, more interesting show than a straight-on sunrise.

Layers help. The bluffs sit around 4,900 feet and the temperature is reliably 8-10 degrees cooler than downtown Gatlinburg. A hoodie and a thin shell handle most May mornings.

The park's own page on Alum Cave lists current trail conditions and any closures. Worth a check the night before — washouts happen after big rain.

Breakfast after

If you are back at the trailhead by 9:30 and back in town by 10, Crockett's Breakfast Camp on the Parkway has the calories to refill what the climb burned. The biscuits-and-gravy plate alone is a two-person meal. We have been recommending it from the desk for years.

For a quieter, faster turnaround, the lobby coffee at our place is free and the small dining nook off the lobby has tables open by then.

Why this matters for booking

Mid-May rates are noticeably better than Memorial Day rates, which kick in the following week. A weeknight stay May 12 through May 21 gets you the May weather, the late-spring trails, and prices that have not jumped yet.

Direct booking at stayinsmokies.com/properties/days-inn-suites-gatlinburg keeps the line of communication short: one confirmation, one cancellation policy, one phone number if the weather changes the morning of the hike.
